It is 18 meters long, overflowing with energy, but almost immovable.

The brief was to conceptualise and illustrate an 18 meter mural of epic evolutionary steps. Every step of man, from out of his cave to that small one he took onto the moon had to incorporate Maxilift’s equipment.

The tone had to be fun and appealing. You only have to meet Murray Van to be immediately and totally immersed in fun, let alone look through his portfolio. Which is why Murray was perfect for this brief. We don’t know many personalities that can remain “fun and appealing” through 30 days illustrating one theme. It has to be innate.

Murray started the illustration in pencil then completed it digitally in 4 sections. Each 4.5 meters x 2.5 meters – 1/4 size, 600 dpi in Photoshop. The final mural was printed on 12 large panels (aluminium – each 1.5 meters x 2.5 meters) for transportation in a custom made box.

If you are shocked at the sheer size and amount of activity evoked by the images below you are not alone. When completed the artwork was “oversize” and so much bedlam ensued as people desperately tried to find a delivery aircraft large enough to transport it as freight.
