The most impressive we’ll ever be is when we are true to our selves

Mar 11 2011
If there was one way to put doubt in our minds when challenging Ken Taylor it would be through showmanship and performance. Drew Funk has it in spades. On Wednesday night, dressed all in black, Drew Funk danced on stage armed with a brush on the end of a fighting stick with dreadlocks sparying every direction from behind a Japanese Kubuki style mask. It was an impressive start.

Ken Taylor simply took a long sip from his beer and began.

Drew Funk deserves the massive following he has amongst street artists. What most people don’t know is that Ken also used to spray paint the walls of the Victorian suburbs many years ago. Ken knows that the graffiti artist is intolerant of bull shit. He knows that they can smell dishonesty and they will slam it. There is also a great respect amongst them for skill and craft.

Ken’s appreciation and respect for graffiti artists was demonstrated in the piece he completed in 90 minutes on Wednesday night. The subject matter and the style in which he executed it was extremely true to himself as an artist. Look at Ken’s portfolio and personal work and you’ll see that he loves detailing textures. He goes to extreme lengths to contrast one texture from another. That he attempted this at Secret Wars without any “undo” button or the ability to zoom in on the work was fearless. That he succeeded at making gnarly skin stand out from feathers, bark contrast against leaves wet working LIVE in only a single tone is what everyone gazed upon with awe.

It was the most ambitious piece Ken has attempted within 90 minutes in front of the crowd which shows his respect for Drew Funk. Scroll below to see Drew Funk’s entrance and Ken Taylor’s piece from it’s early beginnings right through to its jaw dropping completion.
