Ken Taylor’s illustrations face off

Oct 20 2011
A steely eyed stare, calm confidence and intensity are as prevalent in these illustrations Ken Taylor did for Optus as they are in Taylor him self when he first eyes off the white page before he carves it up with his high contrast shadows and highlights.

M&C Saatchi commissioned Ken Taylor to draw up a fight poster that carried all the antagonistic tone of a heavy weight jungle rumble. The poster was to promote that Optus’s online campaign was inviting app programmers to throw down against one another and invent the most useful business app to make available to their business customers.

This target audience required that the poster illustrations not be unbridled, frenetic, explosions of colour and costume. The antagonists had to be slick, business brawlers with brains. Ken Taylor’s high contrast style undoubtedly delivers impact, but what really leaves a lasting impression on his audience is the overall affect of where every line, shadow and highlight fall. That is how he delivers the desired mood. If Hulk is a grenade, Ken Taylor is a sniper’s rifle and that’s what this brief required.
