Joe Whyte takes his latest work very personally

Jun 16 2010
Joe Whyte is extremely hard on himself. If he is not happy with something in an illustration, but can’t put his finger on why, he’ll start again. Usually this will happen at around 4am. He is a perfectionist.

Ironically you could say his perfectionism is incorrigible. Below is a digital painting Joe has completed as a tribute to the extremely popular game BioShock. We have included a couple of zooms so that you can appreciate the textures Joe has painstakingly worked into this digital painting.

As you scroll down through the images below you will see Joe is pushing his sense of symmetry and balance to a new sophistication. You can see the arches of the ceiling reflected in the golden arch frame of the giant robot diver’s diving bell.

Then Joe does what Joe does best, he contrasts the graceful lines of symmetry with something he wants our attention to be redirected to. In this case it is the sharp sting of the needle and the drill which break the images gentle underwater tone with bloody brutality. Or in other words how Joe visually delivers a biological shock to portray the game’s namesake.
