For the first time we present a LIVE commission

Sep 15 2009
We at Drawing Book Studios take the greatest satisfaction at watching the results of an artist working in their element. Actually it drives what we do.

When Robin Eley first sent samples to us the two strongest aspects that shone out were his ability to depict fractured light and his incredible appreciation of humanity, personality and expression, in other words, his passion for people. The piece that best demonstrates this is the first image below if you scroll down.

Following on from that image are a series of studies and sketches for the current commission he is working on. This commission has presented a rare opportunity for us to present you with Robin’s work-in-progress as it happens. This is because, unlike our usual commissions for the media, this project is not confidential.

This commission is for a painting which will ultimately hang at almost 2 metres wide in a restaurant in Lygon street Victoria. What makes the restaurant unique is its focus on education, with an entire floor dedicated to cooking classes. It was this unique aspect of the restaurant that provoked Robin to tease a concept out of the origins of any great culinary dish and what better subject than the omnipresent ingredient, olive oil.

But it’s time to stop talking and let you start perusing, please take a scroll through Robin’s process and we hope it whets your appetite enough for you to come back for the next installment as we continue to post the development of this unique commission.
