Christer Erikkson revels in impossibility

Jun 16 2010
The latest imagery required to promote Sydney’s most popular fun run gave Drawing Book’s most seasoned photorealist a run for his money.

Whybin TBWA Sydney called us in to reveal an idea on an epic scale with the most minute timeline possible. Luckily Christer Eriksson loves ideas like this so it didn’t take long to know it was a job only suited to him.

As a photorealistic illustrator he is most happy when he is bending reality in order to help a client realise an image so interesting that truth is suspended.

The first press ad which we have on show for you below shows how he did it. With photography in the family Christer’s skills include photography as well as illustration. What should become apparent as you scroll through the steps involved in creating the final image is that Christer used photos he took of people running and retouched each one in order to illustrate a wave crashing through the iconic start of the race.

Even though this commission was just over a week from start to finish and had Christer sprinting the entire way he still managed to slow down and add some artistic subtlety to the final image. Note the clouds above in the final image. See the two waves breaking in the sky? This is how Christer takes control of every element within an image to ensure a client’s message is delivered.
