Billmund breathes life into three decapitated amigos

Nov 4 2011
Body language has been said to be responsible for 93 percent of human communication. Character Designer, Billmund, challenged himself to grab that last seven percent in this latest commission for Cuervo tequila via The Marketing Store Sydney.

Bec asked Billmund a few questions regarding the commission.

Q: What were the challenges involved in bringing the mariachi cut out to life?

A: The main challenge in designing the cut out was cramming these larger than life characters into such a small frame while avoiding a confusing cacophony of limbs and instruments.

Q: What did you find enjoyable about this project?

A: Giving these bodies such cheesy and endearing body language. ACTUALLY that was probably the biggest challenge – giving faceless bodies real character and emotion so it’s going to be funny no matter who sticks their head through the hole.

Q: What did the process involve?

A: 1. Google Image Search: Mariachi
2. Pose in front of full-length mirror and take photos with Photo Booth on the MacBook Pro.
Even though the final design was obviously faceless I designed the Mariachis with strong and varied facial expressions so that their faces could direct me in rendering their postures and differing body language.
3. Google Image Search: Mariachi guitar, Mariachi violin.
4. Render in pencil.
5. Render in ink.
6. Photoshop colour
7. Fit bodies onto template
8. Cut off their heads.

The pencils, final artwork and display are below. We are super proud of Billmund’s amigos and believe he couldn’t have injected more personality into them if he was Chevy Chase, Steve Martin or Martin Short.
